We already have robots working in retail and robots involved in law enforcement. The roads are already serving self driving trucks as people wonder why they can’t sell their data to Big Tech and make a profit. Are robot avatars replacing the need to travel a logical next step?
Japan’s largest airline, a stakeholder with plenty to lose if travel is less necessary in the future, is indeed betting that robot avatars can replace some need to travel. ANA Holdings plans to roll out massive shipments of its robot avatar in 2020. The device is designed to take advantage of virtual reality to place you into a scene as if you were right there visiting loved ones or at a live event like a concert or sporting event. It’s not that unlike a virtual reality headset, but looks more like an iPad stuck on a stick that is kind of like a robot.
