Why Do Cats Lick You?

In general, cats lick as a sign of social bonding of some sort.  Cats have complex emotions so the specific reason why a cat is licking at any moment can vary.  It should be noted that cats tend to groom each other as well.  Older cats can generally help out other cats and cats help get to the difficult to reach places on each other’s bodies.

The cat licking you could just be an old fashioned compliment.  The cat feels very safe ad secure with you so the cat licks you just like the cat was licked as a kitten by mom.  Cats can also lick out of anxiety or even become compulsive with licking.  A compulsive disorder related to cat licking is called feline hyperesthesia.

Cats like to lick salt as well, and this of course refers to domesticated cats.  Don’t expect a friendly lick from a jaguar.
