What Is Virtue Signaling?
Oxford Dictionaries defines it as such:
the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one’s good character or the moral correctness of one’s position on a particular issue:
Think of it as a lecture that generally comes via the traditional media or especially social media in today’s society. A newscaster or celebrity on TV lecturing you about how to eat or what to wear or what cause to support. Someone on Twitter or Facebook expressing their superiority vis a vis the mere mortals that are “followers” on social media. It might cause one to reply using a SMH or TBH or even the new hot term of “Ok, Boomer”. People often use a GIF or meme to virtue signal as well., and who ws perhaps they are trying to live vicariously through someone else.
Example: someone you follow on Twitter makes statements about a particular type of food they eat with the message attached and/or implied that such a selection is “the right choice” and superior to what others are doing.
