What Is Esports?
Esports stands for “Electronic sports”. It is a term used to describe the sport of competing in video games. The video games themselves don’t have to be sports games, but the act of playing against others and competing is the sport. Popular sports games like NBA 2K are very popular in Esports but so are games such as Fortnite.
Esports is rapidly growing and becoming a huge business. Several million streams online per day occur watching Esports, and the competitions are even selling out some arenas. Colleges and universities are starting to offer Esports scholarships, and players are being paid to play on Esports teams and practice and compete like other professional athletes.
Owners from the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, and New England Patriots are already involved with their own teams and investments, so if Esports continues to grow its likely that other owners and investors will follow. The Dallas Mavericks owner is known for pushing the edge on innovation. How long will it be until you see consistent events held at venues such as Madison Square Garden, TD Garden, and the Staples Center? Time will tell.
