What Does GOAT Mean?
GOAT stands for Greatest Of All Time. The term GOAT is used loosely by anyone describing a performer of some sort. This typically relates to sports and athletics but it can also relate to musicians, actors, business people, or anyone really.
In recent times due to his fifth Super Bowl victory, Tom Brady of the New England Patriots generated heavy discussion about being the GOAT of the NFL and football. There was debate between Brady and Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers, but many feel the fifth Super Bowl pushed Brady over the edge. Others try to make the case for Peyton Manning given his time with the Colts and Broncos or even someone like Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears. Then Brady got six and it was all over.
The same happens in basketball and other sports. Some fans argue for Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls, and others think it is Lebron James or Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers. or maybe it’s Magic Johnson or Kareem Abdul-Jabar of the Lakers. Others feel strongly supporting Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics. Baseball fans go back and forth between Willie Mays of the Giants or Babe Ruth of the Yankees.
Hockey seems to be close to unanimous about Wayne Gretzky and his time with the Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings. In tennis it tends to revolve around the winners of the biggest tournaments such as Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Roger Federer and Serena Williams are certainly at the top of many lists.
