Tricks for Hunting and Trapping Wild Hogs

Like hunting any other animal, getting a bead on a wild hog is an art form. From knowing the signs of a nearby herd to learning what bait to use, we have the tips you need to know. Read on to learn three tricks for hunting and trapping wild hogs.

Use Great Bait

First, you’ve got to know the bait that attracts hogs without fail. Our first option is a weird one: soured corn. Soak the corn in water (in a bucket), then add a box of Jell-O powder. Throw in a packet of yeast as well, and leave the bucket in the sun (with the lid on). In about a week, you’ll have a bona fide hog magnet.

You can also shop for hog attractants at your local sporting goods store. Add some of this to a little corn, and you’ll have hogs lining up for a snack!

Find Their Wallows

When you’re out in boar country, keep an eye out for mud puddles and trees with worn bark. Hogs love to wallow in the mud and rub lice off using tree bark, so these landmarks can help you zero in on their location. You can also create your own wallow zones by making mud puddles underneath your stand. If you’re using one, this is a great way to get the prey to come to you.

Try Hunting at Night

If you want to add a little excitement to the mix, you can try hog hunting at night. You’ll need some hunting lights, but this is often an effective way to spot more pigs—they’re more active at night.

You can pair either (or both) of our previous tips with this one to all but guarantee some hog encounters. Just remember, night hunting is more dangerous. Bring along a buddy and take special care to follow strict gun safety rules.
