The need for a dependable, versatile all-terrain vehicle to carry soldiers and cargo was intense as America geared up for World War II, and the Jeep served as the solution. Fast-forward through the years, and the Jeep became one of the most iconic brands on the consumer market. Let’s look at some of the most significant models that Jeep has produced throughout the company’s history.
Coming in at the top spot is the original war solution, the Willys MB. This was the answer to the US government’s request for a new military vehicle. The MB’s build made it the perfect fit for all duties, from soldier transport and cargo hauling. It could haul a minimum of 1,300 pounds across unpredictable terrains, and its dependability and adaptability put the brand on the map.
Jeep mastered the art of the SUV and created several versions for consumers to rely on. One of its first SUVs with improved off-road capabilities was the 1984 Cherokee. It housed an engine with 190 horsepower, and at the time of its release, this outranked the competition.
The Wagoneer opened many new doors for the auto industry, especially for Jeep. It was the first SUV of its kind, with both an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The Wagoneer housed a unique feature, the Quadra-Trac drive system. These original Wagoneers went on to have a healthy production line of nearly 28 years, and they’ll soon make a modern-day revival with the all-new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer WS.
The CJ-5 contributed to Jeep’s consumer success and opened the door to a world of off-road activities and various industrial applications. Many farmers liked the idea of the CJ-5 because of the vehicle’s reliability and adaptability in all settings. The design concept resembled that of the original tactical military vehicle, giving it an edge over other off-road vehicles. It received various engine revisions as time progressed to ensure it remained compatible with consumers’ demands.
After the war concluded, automakers faced the new challenge of finding ways to reintroduce vehicles to civilians. Jeep answered this challenge by introducing the Jeepster Commando in 1966. The purpose of the Commando was to bring more fun to the market with multiple rows of seats and an open-air concept. This versatile daily driver was an appealing option for the time.
Jeep has produced some of the most iconic vehicle models on the road, both in and out of the civilian market. If you ever stumble across one of these originals, take a moment to appreciate the advancements in technology.
