Signs Your Server’s SSD Is Failing

Every business needs its server to continue running and stay fully optimized so the business can also keep running efficiently. When the system is having issues, it can be due to any number of things. In this article, we’ll look at the signs your server’s SSD is failing. If your server shows these symptoms, you’ll know to check the SSD first.

What Is SSD?

SSD, or solid state storage, uses flash memory to store data on computers and servers. Solid state storage, today, often replaces an HDD (hard disk drive) due to its smaller size and incredible storage capabilities. There are a few sure signs warning us that an SSD failure is imminent.

The Screen of Death

It’s a bit of a dramatic nickname, but the blue screen of death earns its title from the frustration that ensues when it appears on a screen, leaving employees to feel as though the entire server has gone down. When computers turn on, and there’s just an unfriendly blue screen staring back at you, it’s one of the signs your server’s SSD is failing and may need replacing.

Frozen or Crashing

The system keeps freezing up or crashing altogether, and before you know it, it’s affecting efficiency at work. Have your IT people check the SSD to see if it’s failing. There may be no room left on it, meaning it’s time to clean things up, update the system, or add another SSD.

Read-Only Error

It’s pretty frustrating to receive the read-only error when trying to save a file. When it happens, any processes that require SSD writing of data aren’t allowed. This is one of the reasons that backing up data is so important. In some cases, transferring the now read-only SSD to an external hard drive may help reverse the issue.

It Won’t Boot

You’ve tried rebooting over and over, unplugged and plugged the system back in repeatedly, and the system still won’t boot. The SSD is probably on its last leg, or it’s got some bad blocks. Give your diagnostic tools a go, and if they don’t help, there’s a good chance it’s an SSD problem.

Always contact IT in your company when the server acts up. Professional diagnosis is quick and reliable. Use these helpful hints for quick diagnosing as you wait for IT. SSDs are the perfect data storage choice, but just like all parts of a server, they sometimes need updating.
