Internet Speed Throttling and How to Escape It

Is there really life without the internet? You wouldn’t know nor would you want to find out. Parting with your Wi-Fi is as hard a goodbye as any. Maybe more. But the good thing is that the internet is everywhere. And it’s required for every little task. However, even with technology growing every day, there are still problems with internet connections. Although these are rare with
Spectrum 1800 number. You would expect Wi-Fi signals to run in perfect condition by this time. But they don’t. And this problem seems to be getting only more common. However, you don’t have to put up with your internet acting up anymore. It’s time to put it in its place. Literally. Placement really does help. But you can solve internet speed throttling in just a few simple steps. Here’s how.

Check Your Modem’s Placement

This one sounds like a no-brainer. But you’d be surprised by the number of people that place their modems in a land far far away. And then complain about their internet connection acting sluggish. When the modem is placed in a remote area, there’ a good chance that internet signals will not reach the central house or building. Also, make sure that it isn’t blocked by anything. This can also slow down the speed and signal strength.  So, in order to ensure your internet works fine, place it in a central spot. And don’t put any heavy or large objects near or around it. This will give it room to work better.

Keep a Check on Your Data Cap

Internet service providers can be sneaky. In fact, they’re so good at getting away with things that they have data caps in place. And there’s a good chance you didn’t even know about this. Such caps limit the amount of data you can access every month. So, when you’re near the end of this cap, you will likely notice internet speed throttling. This is why it’s important to keep a check on your agreement with your ISP. To resolve this, simply talk to your ISP about the problem. You can also upgrade your data cap so it doesn’t run out so easily.

Look Out for Network Congestion

Sometimes, internet service providers use internet speed throttling to overcome network congestion. This happens when too many users are trying to access the network or connect. In cases like these, ISPs try using bandwidth throttling to control traffic. This ensures that every user can gain access to the network. Even if it’s painfully slow. But this isn’t the only time your speed can be throttled. It also happens when you take up too much bandwidth. This usually happens when downloading very large files or torrents. To avoid this, keep a check on your ISP’s activities. And if you notice your connection is slow, inform your service provider to make sure the issue isn’t related to them.

Make Use of a VPN

A Virtual Private Network is the easiest way you can stop internet speed throttling. This works because your internet service provider can’t see your traffic. A VPN will prevent them from viewing your traffic. Your ISP also won’t be able to see the protocols, services, and websites you’re using. A virtual private network is a very safe and effective way to stop internet speed throttling. Here’s a list of top-rated VPNs you can use.

ExpressVPN

Cyber Ghost

Norton Secure VPN

SurfShark

NordVPN

Watch Out for Paid Prioritization

This one’s ugly. And illegal. Or at least it should be. Paid prioritization means that some service providers throttle certain applications to discourage users from using them. These usually include sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. This is very common among ISPs. And it’s done so that customers are forced to switch to streaming sites that are connected with the ISPs themselves. They also make sure that their sites load faster so that customers can’t complain of slow and sluggish speeds. But the good news is, you can fight this. Such types of internet speed throttling can be fought with a virtual private network.

Check Your USB Port

Now there’s a good chance your internet speed is just the victim of a faulty USB port. This is one of the easiest and most common ways your signals and speed suffer. A lot of USB ports can wear out and cause connection issues. So, it’s always a good idea to get these replaced or checked before looking out for bigger culprits.
