Interesting Facts about Florida

The southernmost state of the United States of America, Florida is the 3rd most populous state. It has the Gulf of Mexico to the west and Alabama to the northwest. Florida is one of the most reputable states of the United States, boasting of a strong economy and a dense population. Below are some interesting facts that you may not have known about Florida.

Population: In terms of population, Florida was among the top ten fastest growing populations in the United States. The state has a population of more than 20 million people. The population is diverse consisting of many retirees, immigrants and people born in other states. The population doubled since the late ‘80s. Florida contains people from a diverse set of ethnic backgrounds to include influence from Cuba, Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Golf: The state of Florida has a pretty rich history of golf. The world Golf Hall of Fame and Museum is hosted in the state. It is also home to the most golf courses throughout the country.

Alligators and Crocodiles: Florida’s wildlife diversity is quite unique. It is only in the Florida Everglades that you can find crocs and gators living together.

Agriculture: Florida is an agriculturally productive state. It is currently the country’s largest producer of watermelons. Besides melons, the state also produces significant amounts of sugar, strawberries and tomatoes.

History: Under the military governorship of General Andrew Jackson, Florida officially became part of the United States territory in 1821.

Spanish Influence: The state is considerably influenced by the Spanish language. The name Florida means ”land of flowers” in Spanish. Punta Gorda is also a Spanish name that means “fat point”. The name is associated with the broad land mass in Punta Gorda that extends into the Charlotte Harbor. This can be attributed to the fact that the first contact with the state was made by Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer.

Spring Training:  Florida of course is home to high levels of baseball at the youth and high school level, college level, and right up through the highest levels of professional baseball.  One of the flagship seasons each year for Florida is MLB Spring Training.  During MLB Spring Training most of the teams in Major League Baseball spend about two months in Florida preparing for the long and rigorous baseball season.  This includes the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.  Another chunk of teams, to include the Los Angeles Dodgers, spend spring training in Arizona.

Geography: A peninsula, Florida is almost totally surrounded by water. The state is only bordered by two other states, Georgia and Alabama. Sports:  Florida is one of the largest states by both population and geography, so there are literally dozens of NCAA level colleges that compete in athletics.  The most noteworthy are the University of Miami Hurricanes, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, and University Of Central Florida Knights.
