Fun Fall Treats You Can Make for Your Dog

One of the best parts about fall is all the baking you get to do. But sometimes, you don’t want to end up eating all those treats yourself. If that’s the case, consider making a few treats for your dog. Here are some of our favorite fun fall treats you can make for your dog.

Things To Keep in Mind

Before we jump into the recipes, there are a few things to note when making treats for dogs. Never add extra sugar to these treats, as it won’t sit well with your furry friend’s digestive system. You’ll also want to stay away from nutmeg, chocolate, and peanut butters with xylitol. Most big brands don’t use that ingredient anymore, but you should still always check the label.

Root Veggie Jerky

Don’t have a dehydrator? Don’t worry! You can make easy vegetarian “jerky” for your dog using your oven. Slice up some thin pieces of carrot and sweet potatoes on a cookie sheet, then bake them at the lowest temperature possible for 8 to 10 hours, depending on thickness. Your jerky pieces should look dark and leathery when they’re done.

Cinnamon Apple Oat Bars

This treat is similar to one that people often enjoy, but these doggie snacks don’t have added sugar or butter. All you need to do is grind a few cups of oats in a food processor, then repeat with a couple of apples until you’ve basically created your own applesauce. Mix together with a few tablespoons of honey and a sprinkling of cinnamon, then bake each bar has golden edges.

Peanut Butter Pumpkin Cookies

To make these tasty cookies, mix a can of pureed pumpkin with half a cup of peanut butter and enough flour to make a dough. Roll out your dough and cut it into fun shapes with your favorite cookie cutter, then bake until golden brown.

When making fun fall treats for your dog, always be sure to start by giving your pup a small piece of the treat. Easing them into the new snack gives you a chance to see how their tummy will react to the treat. Once you know you’re good to go, you can offer these treats as a reward for tricks or send them with your pup to doggie daycare. Even dogs love a homemade treat in their lunchbox!
