All mechanics and automotive shop owners know that diesel engines differ from their gasoline counterparts. These differences go beyond requiring a special type of gas. Their maintenance and care requirements are as different as their repairs. As such, mechanics need to use specific equipment and follow certain guidelines to repair these engines. Check out these essential parts and tools for rebuilding a diesel engine.
Rebuilding a diesel engine is not the same as rebuilding a home. Some of these tools involved in the process will seem pretty standard, but they’re actually specific to the repairs in question. Diesel engine repairs require the use of three different types of hammers.
Rebuilding a diesel engine also requires three different types of socket sets. This may seem excessive, but each set provides essential benefits for a rebuilt diesel engine. First, you’ll need a 1/2″ drive socket set. The top-notch sets come equipped with close to 80 pieces. There’s no guarantee you’ll need to use every piece, but it’s good to be prepared.
The 3/8″ drive socket set and the 1/4″ drive socket set can come with between 34 and 69 pieces. It’s always best to get a set with more pieces. Each set serves a different purpose for the engine; having the right pieces allows for more customization in the rebuilding process.
Screwdrivers are a no-brainer. Mechanics will need them to loosen and tighten different areas and components of the engine. Consider getting Philips, flathead, and Torx screwdrivers. It’s always good to have variety when it comes to screwdrivers.
The Philips has a head with pointed edges in the shape of a cross, making it easy to fit cross slots. The flathead comes in various sizes, and the Torx screwdriver has an L shape with a six-pointed star cross-section. You may need other screwdrivers for the rebuilding process, such as a hex key, triangle, or square screwdriver, but these three are the most beneficial in a variety of cases.
Lastly, all mechanics need a good set of wrenches in their toolboxes. Because each wrench serves a slightly different purpose, there are six different types of wrenches you will need to repair diesel engines.
Each serves a purpose, but pay close attention to the oil filter wrench. Depending on the years and mileage of the current engine, you’ll need to ensure it’s properly cleansed while rebuilding it.
We’ve established that a diesel engine requires specific care, but the essential parts and tools do as well. Take good care of the equipment to ensure success during the rebuild.
