Additional Information:
The Boston Celtics franchise has a rich history that dates back more than a century. They have been a big part of NBA sports for well over a century. As a group, they won six championships, two more than the Los Angeles Lakers, one more than the Detroit Pistons, and one more than the Dallas Mavericks. In the most recent NBA playoff series, the Celtics swept the Orlando Magic in five games, sending the Miami Heat to the loser’s side of the Eastern Conference for the NBA Finals.
During all those years, no team has reached the pinnacle of international basketball as the Celtics, who currently leads the NBA in points, scoring percentage, assists, and steals per game. The question is, how long can they keep this streak going? How long can they continue to be known as one of the greatest teams in the history of professional basketball?
The most recent of Celtics’ titles came at the end of last season, and they didn’t even have a true number retired. However, the current Celtics haven’t tasted victory yet, and the question on the lips of basketball fans all around the world is: Will they ever win another title? The current roster features a number retired that can make any team fan’s day, from Bill Russell to Peja Stojakovic, to Ray Allen and Garnett himself. There is no doubt that these players represent the very best of the entire league/elite basketballing world.
Larry Bird was one of the greatest Celtic players of all-time, and is the team’s all-time leading scorer. He won six titles and is second in points scored behind Peja Stojakovic. However, Bird is also coming to the end of his illustrious career. Right now, he is focusing on his role as an NBA coach, and rightfully so. Bird is no doubt a valuable commodity, and many feel his career deserves to be ended with an appropriate send off.
Two other Celtic that will go down as definite Hall-Of-Fame caliber players are John Stockton and Peja Stojakovic. They are the first team… and third overall… ever to win six National Basketball League championships. They are also the only players in the history of the league to post six straight 20-win seasons. Many will argue that they were simply better than every team that has come before them, but that is merely a subjective argument. Who can argue with the results, and certainly those that have gone before them?
John Stockton ranks right up there as one of the most successful players in the history of the Boston Celtics, and the face of the franchise. There is no doubt that he was one of the best, and most dominant players of all-time, period. His ability to make adjustments, both on the court and off, is something that is unmatched by anyone else in the Hall. The fact that he never missed the playoffs despite missing half of the previous six years is also well-deserved. Many people will debate his title as the best player ever, but few will debate his significance and impact on the franchise and the entire league.
Peja Stojakovic, who was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1985… is another player who deserves inclusion in the Boston Celtic hall of fame. While it is true that he didn’t win any titles nor even make any playoff appearances, his tenure in Boston was arguably the best in team history. He played for six different coaches and led the team in points scored twice, rebounds twice, assists once, and steals once. While it may be debated whether or not he was as good as Earl Monroe or Bob Cousy, no one can argue with the statistics.
The “Celtics dynasties” which followed after Stojakovic’s retirement were particularly incredible. The present-day Boston Celtics is led by a fleet of talented players, many of whom played during the halcyon years of the Boston Celtic franchise. Yet, no team, including the defending Eastern Conference champion Cleveland Cavaliers, could have come close to competing with the excellent group of players that were assembled in Boston. The Boston Celtics has a rightful claim to being the greatest team ever assembled in the history of the National Basketball Association.
